Harrogate, Saturday April 29th 2017 – At the conclusion of a palpitating second edition of the ASDA Women’s Tour de Yorkshire, Great Britain’s Lizzie Deignan rode solo to a convincing victory at Harrogate. The former world champion beat Coryn Rivera and Giorgia Bronzini by nearly a minute. And it was a special win taken not far from her hometown of Otley where her proud grandmother watched full of emotion. 

Lizzie’s team Boels Dolmans worked hard from the drop of the flag, they policed the whole race stretching and testing the peloton with an eye on every little break or move.

The race really suited me and I knew the roads better than anyone else, so I took advantage of that. With 15km to go my Sports Director was telling me to save myself for the sprint but I knew we still had some small climbs to go. I knew it wasn’t going to come back together so I went on the attack. I didn’t dare believe I’d actually won the race until about 1km to go through because I felt like I was getting slower and slower.

The finish was so special and so surreal, and it meant so much to me to receive such great support. It was incredible and I’m struggling to get my head around it. This is up there with the biggest wins of my career, definitely. There were a lot of big teams here and the Tour is growing into a really prestigious race. We don’t get crowds like this in women’s cycling very often and it was unbelievable to see so many people on the roadside. The fact that the whole race was televised live as well was really important. You’ll only see stronger and stronger women coming to this race in the future because of that, and the best riders specifically targeting this race.

Tour de Yorkshire – Stage 1 Report

Scarborough, Friday April 28th 2017 – The racing got underway with riders testing the peloton from the start. Attempts at a breakaway were made by Matt Cronshaw (Madison Genesis) and Ben o’Connor (Dimension Data) both were reeled back in and a punchy counter attack came from the ever ready Russ Downing (JLT Condor), sadly none of these stuck but it did break some legs in in the process. A solid breakaway came from 7 plucky riders at Driffield consisting of; Havik, Quemeneur, Dunne, Horton, Gradek, Madrazo, van Empel and Lowsley-Williams. Van Empel spoilt James Lowsley-Williams fun as did others on a number of occasions by pipping him to the points on the KoM’s and Sprint points.

It was a hard stage. I was dropped on the climbs sometimes, but luckily the team was there to protect me all day long. I was lucky on the finish, because Caleb Ewan was very close. The Tour de Yorkshire seems to like me. Last year I also won the first stage, in front of Caleb Ewan, again. Hopefully, I can fight for another victory tomorrow.

Winner - TdY 2017 Stage 1, Lotto NL Jumbo

The peloton brought it all back together eventually. Despite the tough hills to climb on the final part of stage 1 of the Tour de Yorkshire, victory was decided on a bunched sprint in Scarborough. Like a year ago on the opening day of the race, Dylan Groenewegen only just claimed the win. The Dutchman powered to line beating Caleb Ewan by a few inches. Third place went to Chris Opie. Thanks to his success, he captures the overall lead and will be proudly wearing the leader’s blue jersey on tomorrow’s stage 2. This first chapter of the 2017 edition also saw several riders hit the deck after a crash occurred in the final 500m.

Race Report & Gallery – Nat Women’s Road Series 2017 | Tour of the Wolds

The sun shone brightly for Lizzy Banks of Sunsport Velo RT in the season opener of the HSBC-UK British Cycling 2017 National Women’s Road Series the Tour of the Wolds, won in two-hours and thirty-four minuets and thirty-five seconds.

The first of nine rounds and a new course to the calendar, the Tour of the Wolds covers a distance of one-hundred and one kilometres setting out from Louth North-Westerly through South Elkinton and Binbrooke before turning Northerly at Tealby and onto a circuit through Caistor, then returning back to Louth and a three-kilometre twisty circuit through the town centre streets.

One-hundred riders set off at nine in the morning out of Louth, but split into three groups before arriving at the Caistor loop. The front group of around thirty riders rode up the testing climb at Nettleton Top but as they returned back towards Louth, six girls broke free.

 

Three times series winner Nikki Juniper [Team Ford Ecoboost], National Time Trial Champion Hayley Simmond [Team WNT], Anna Christian [Drops Cycling Team], Lizzy Banks [Sunsport Velo], Chanel Mason [Storey Racing] and Natalie Grinczer [Team WNT] arrived back on the finishing circuit with a one-minuet and ten second lead as Drops Cycling and Cycle Team OnForm drove the chase.

With three-hundred metres remaining, Juniper clipped wheels bringing her down and out of contention leaving five girls to fight for the win. Banks kept out of trouble and maintained her momentum going into the final left-hand corner before sprinting clearly for the line and a marvellous win.

Rebecca Durrell [Drops Cycling Team] brought the chasing bunch to the line some thirty-two seconds down on a beautiful day in Lincolnshire, much to the appreciation of the crowd that had lined the circuit in this first national race in the series.

Lizzy Banks leads the National Women’s Road Series going into round two the Essex Giro on Saturday 22nd April.

The Tour of the Wolds has given a boost to businesses in the area as well as significantly raising the profile of the Lincolnshire Wolds as a destination for cycling.

The event saw teams of professional cyclists and spectators staying in the area; and generated lots of exposure for the area through the media.  Feedback received from the competitors is that they enjoyed the challenge the Wolds presented to them; and that it is a great place for cycling.

We’ll now be working with our partners and the event organisers to look at what needs to be done to secure the event for future years.

The Magna Vitae Tour of the Wolds has significantly raised the profile of Louth and the Lincolnshire Wolds. It is wonderful to see a sporting event change the face of the town for a day.
