Dennis proves to be too strong for his rivals – Men’s Elite Individual Time Trial

Aussie Rohan Dennis takes the Elite Men’s Individual Time Trial Championship for the second year in a row, with a winning margin of over a minute from his nearest rivals, Remoc Evenepoel of Belgium and Filippo Ganna of Italy.

Dennis completed the 54km course in 1 hour, 5 minutes 5.35 seconds with Evenepoel 1 minute 8.93 seconds behind with Ganna a further 46 seconds in arrears.

The course started in Northallerton and, although the weather was much better than the previous day, the event would see its fair share of incidents, with riders hitting the deck and one of the pre-race favourites, Belgian Victor Campenaerts, suffering a snapped chain out on the course.

GB’s John Archibald was the early leader, with teammate Alex Dowsett also sitting in the hot seat for a very short while before Ganna took the lead, coming in less than a minute after Dowsett.

Dennis admitted later that he had initially been in a negative place after his early exit from the Tour de France, but the power of the support he received from his family and his coach helped him to refocus and get back on track.

Rohan Dennis – Mens Elite Individual Time Trial World Champion – Press Conference

I did a lot of work to get mentally prepared for today and I was confident in my ability. Once I got out there I was able to let my legs do the talking. I knew the pace I went out with [at the Championships] last year and just stuck on that. I was 20 seconds up at the first time check and knew I still had more to give and that I wasn’t going to die on the climbs. It was perfect and the course today was awesome as well. We first saw it on Saturday and instantly loved it, so whoever designed it, thanks for that!

Rohan Dennis

Men's Elite Individual Time Trial World Champion, Team Australia

On every kilometre of the route today we saw pride and passion from the fans, and that true Yorkshire spirit. Special mention to Northallerton for the way the community came together to celebrate the race. Every business had adopted a country and their window displays were brilliant. The UCI Road World Championships have never seen land art like what was on the route today either as well, and the footage of this event is taking Yorkshire global.

Peter Dodd

Commercial Director, Welcome to Yorkshire

It was a good ride and I’m happy with how I executed our plan today. The crowds out there were mad, clearly many people had taken a day off work to cheer us on and that was really good of them. It gave us an extra something. We definitely had to dig in and hearing that support gave us extra power. It really helped and I’m super grateful – this was a really cool result.

Yorkshire is the home of cycling in the UK and this has been colossal. There’ll be even bigger crowds at the weekend and it’s an honour to have been a part of it – one to tell the grandkids for sure.

Alex Dowsett

5th in Individual Time Trial, Team GB

We saw some amazing cycling and it was another cracking day for Yorkshire. The crowds in Northallerton were fantastic and they were full of support for the riders as they started. On the climbs and through the villages as well, we couldn’t have asked for any more, and Harrogate provided another great welcome.

It was a challenging course – up and down with plenty of corners – and Rohan produced an incredible display. Seeing his wife and baby there at the finish was very emotional and massive congratulations to him. Remco also deserves a mention. That performance from a 19 year old in an elite event was just amazing, and what a force for the future he will be.

Dygert Reigns Supreme in the Elite Women’s Individual Time Trial

The USA’s Chloe Dygert was too strong for the rest of the field as she powered to victory in the Elite Women’s Individual Time Trial, finishing in 42 minutes and 11.57 seconds, over a minute and a half faster than Anna van der Breggen of the Netherlands, with defending champion, Annemiek van Vleuten, also from the Netherlands, a further 20 seconds back.

The start time was pushed back by 40 minutes as the organisers endeavoured to make the course safe (the U23 men’s event earlier in the day had seen parts of the course near to flooding) and the start intervals were reduced to 60 seconds from 90 seconds to accommodate the delay.

Alena Amialiusik from Belarus was the early leader with a time of 45 minutes 29.13 seconds, which would be good enough for 9th eventually. She would remain in the lead until Dygert finished.

It was clear from the start that Dygert was going to be the rider to beat as she caught her minute rider, Lisa Brennauer of Germany (who would finish in 10th). She was the only rider to go under 20 minutes at the time check after 14.2km (which she did in 18:57.88), although the difference for the second split was around 21 seconds.

Van der Breggen would finish second for the fourth time, with Van Vleuten making up the podium, although both women conceded that to be beaten so emphatically made the disappointment slightly more bearable. One thing’s for sure, Dygert might consider coming to Europe more often (this event being her first in Europe) if today’s result is anything to go by.

It’s always special to wear the rainbow stripes and I worked really hard for this. I had a concussion which forced me to miss last year’s Championships so I prepared specifically for this one and to win is really special.

Being here in Yorkshire is really cool and it’s a really neat place to be. I’ll enjoy this moment tonight but I’ll be competing in the road race on Saturday so it’ll be back to work tomorrow.

It’s been an epic day today. The weather was miserable but the organisational team pulled together really well to sort the course out and they’ve all been brilliant. We obviously didn’t want to delay the women’s race but safety is our paramount concern during these Championships and we didn’t want to send riders out on an unsafe course. We were treated to some fantastic sport across both races and we’ve seen some amazing results.

I have to mention the crowds as well. Despite the conditions there were lots of people out banging the boards, making lots of noise and giving the riders a really warm welcome.

Bjerg makes it three in a row – UCI U23’s Men’s Individual Time Trail

Mikkel Bjerg of Denmark defied the weather to win the Men’s Under-23 World Individual Time Trial Championships in Harrogate with a time of 40 minutes 20.42 seconds, 26 seconds ahead of his nearest rivals, Ian Garrison of the USA and Brandon McNulty of USA less than two seconds behind Garrison.

Bjerg was the undisputed favourite going in to today’s race, having won the World Championship title for the past two years. His Danish teammate, Price-Pejtersen, as European Champion, was one of the only riders who had beaten Bjerg this year, but a crash early on meant that the rivalry would have to be put on hold for another day.

Mikkel Bjerg – UCI Men’s Under 23 Individual Time Trial Champion

Mikkel Bjerg takes the title for third time.

Today was really, really crazy and they were very difficult conditions out there today. I was told to hold my handlebars tight, keep looking ahead of me, and go full gas through the water. I didn’t have any slips or slides so I am over the moon to have pulled off this third victory.

Mikkel Bjerg

UCI Under 23's Individual Time Trial World Champion, Team Denmark

Their teammate, Morten Hulgaard, was the first to start and his time of 41:16.49 was good enough to keep him on the podium for quite some time, and he eventually finished in 6th place.

The event saw rain of epic proportions descending onto the course, with riders later off in the starting order having to navigate roads that were flooded in places, which no doubt had an effect on the final standings. But that perhaps seals Bjerg’s place in the history books, as his third title came in spite of the conditions.

Chapeau to all riders who competed today in atrocious conditions.

I can’t thank the crowds and communities enough for still coming out in their droves to support the riders on the roadside. Today’s been a real challenge because of the weather but everyone pulled together including the emergency services, the councils, highways agencies, and of course, our Yorkshire Team volunteers who’ve all worked their socks off to keep the racing going.

Ripon looked fantastic today, as did all the communities along the route. A huge thank you once again to everyone and hopefully we’ll have drier weather to come!
