Drops take Matrix Fitness GP Title 2017

Matrix Fitness Grand Prix 2017

Team Time Trial

The thirteen team Matrix Fitness Grand Prix concluded in Stevenage this year. Round 8 saw a first for the women’s series event, a team time trial around the one kilometre circuit of the Old Town.

Going into this final round, Drops were 50 points ahead of WNT and Breeze, both on 581 points and the day was divided into two events. The Team Time Trial on the afternoon followed by the final race in the series on the evening.

Two laps of a flat course for each team in reverse order set after Motherwell saw Team RGB Building Supplies setting a time of 2:55.696 and Team Jadan Weldtite p/b Vive le Velo 2:53.963 taken on the third rider across the line.

Team WNT took the overall glory 2.653 seconds ahead of Team Breeze who comprised of mainly track pursuit riders Manon Lloyd, Elinor Barker and Eleanor Dickinson. Olympic Champion Archibald steamed ahead of the WNT train around the two laps whilst Storey Racing came in third. This put WNT back in second overall just one point ahead of Breeze before the final race later in the day.

It was down to the final race of the series to decide the overall victory but a 1-2 for Drops confirmed the 2017 winners and a first individual win for Durrell, Lucy Shaw was second.

Drops with their first Matrix Fitness GP Title led the competition from start to finish. Team Breeze regained second place with Team WNT finishing third overall.

Rebecca Durrell was the clear leader in the individual competition whilst Ejay Harris secured the Eisberg Sprinters Jersey going clear for the first sprint of the night.

Several attacks off the front of the race from Breeze, WNT, Sunsport Velo and OnForm’s Anna Henderson came to nothing as the pace was fast throughout the race and it was left to a thirty rider bunch sprint to decide the out-come all coming back together with three laps remaining, positioning into the final corner being crucial.

Anna Henderson attacked once more on the bell lap with team-mates Sian Botteley, Amy Hill and Alicia Speake close by. Mel Lowther for Team Breeze jumped on the back wheel along the back straight with Elinor Barker third and Charlotte Broughton forth.

The sprint started on the penultimate corner with Drops Lucy Shaw taking the lead. Archibald second goes wide as Rebecca Durrell’s speed puts them side-by-side. Durrell digs deeps, it’s a 1-2 for Drops as both arms punch the air with joy.

All-in-all the Matrix Fitness GP provided good competition throughout the eight rounds with more team taking the start than ever before.

I’m really, really chuffed. The pressure was always going to be on for the team in the last round, even if it’s just from within ourselves.

I knew I’d already won the Individual overall before the start of tonight’s race but I’d deliberately not said anything about that as that would have been even more pressure. So now we’re just all relieved!

Series Wrap-Up

2017 saw the introduction for a team based event, similar to the already established Tour Series awarding the main prize to the best team performance through the series, as well as an individual race winner per event and an overall winner at the finish in Stevenage.

The competition also rewarded the Brother fast lap trophy each round and the Eisberg leaders sprint jersey to add dimension to the race to the highest points rider overall.

Starting off in early May in Redditch in the Midlands the series then moved South to Wembley Park before heading West to Bath and then across the border to Scotland, for the penultimate round in Motherwell and back down to Stevenage for the final.

Alice Barnes, Drops Pro Cycling won round one in Redditch soloing ahead of Katie Archibald, Team WNT and Elinor Barker for Team Breeze. Rebecca Durrell finished fourth and Lucy Shaw’s seventh for Drops, they were the first to pull on the red Matrix Fitness leader’s jerseys moving forward into round two in Stoke ahead by a solitary point over Team WNT with 95 points and Team Breeze third with 88 points.

Katie Archibald wearing the Eisberg Sprint Jersey by default won round two in Stoke with Alice Barnes not in attendance. Four riders broke free including National Criterium Champion and team-mate Eileen Roe along with Manon Lloyd for Team Breeze and Rebecca Durrell for Drops.

Roe softened up the other riders before Archibald finished the job off for WNT.

Annie Simpson was the best of the rest over a minute behind for Drops as they retain the lead again by one point over WNT.

Archibald now holds the Eisberg Sprint Jersey for round three.

With no time to rest the series moved a short distance away to Northwich and a new circuit for the battle to re-commence.

This time a different winner emerged and a different team stood on the podium in the form of Team Breeze. Emily Nelson took her first victory with team-mate Eleanor Dickinson a close second and collecting the best team prize on the night.

Matrix Fitness GrandPrix 2017, Round 7 Motherwell - Eileen Roe

Barnes was back for Drops but no Archibald for WNT so Dickinson became the new Eisberg Sprint leader moving their team into second place overall after three events. Drops lead with 284 points, Breeze 277 points and WNT 268 points.

Durrell’s seventh place finish moved her one point ahead of Nelson in the individual classification with Lydia Boylan for WNT third.

Wembley Park provided the back-drop for round four in the series and a fourth different winner in as many rounds. A brilliant solo victory for Jess Roberts, Liv Epic Coaching her second to-date winning last years final round in Portsmouth.

Leaving the bunch behind to fight for the team competition, Roberts distanced herself with two laps remaining as Durrell won the bunch sprint ahead of Nelson, Barnes and Boylan.

Drops extend their lead by 9 points and Durrell extends her individual lead by 2 points. Eleanor Dickinson retains the Eisberg Sprint Jersey.

Round 5 returned to the rain drenched streets of Croydon where a fifth consecutive new race winner emerged with Ejay Harris for Storey Racing giving them there first ever victory.

Storey Racing had the upper hand around this slippery circuit as they finished 1-2 with Neah Evans in the four rider group that broke free from the main bunch. Annasley Park crossed the line third for Drops with Boyan fourth for WNT.

Harris catapulted herself into second position behind Dickinson in the Eisberg Sprint competition whilst Drops remain the leaders of the Matrix Fitness leaders jerseys 27 points ahead of Breeze, then WNT, then Storey Racing.

Round six moved across the Country to Bath were rain soaked the riders once more, showering the bunch sprint and sixth consecutive different race winner.

This time in was National Criterium Champion Eileen Roe for WNT returning to duty in the Tour Series putting her into the record books and a historic fifth individual win in a bunch sprint once more.

Storey Racing duo Harris and Evans took second and third very closely behind Roe and Anna Henderson secured OnForm’s highest finish to-date.

Ejay Harris won both Eisberg Sprints moving into the lead jersey for the penultimate round 9 points ahead. Durrell remains individual leader and her Drops team now have 51 points advantage ahead of Breeze.

The penultimate round of the Matrix Fitness GP crossed the Boarder for a fourth visit to Motherwell and a square course with a punchy drag up-to the finish line.

Again it was a four ride break that got free including last year’s winner in Motherwell Eileen Roe along with Annasley Park, Drops, Manon Lloyd, Breeze and Lizzy Banks for Sunsport Velo.

The race had been softened again by Scotland’s Roe and Archibald both previous winners but eventually settled with a large group thirty seconds back.

It was Roe that took the victory and back-to-back wins, her sixth to-date breaking free for a solo effort on the final half lap to the applause of an enthusiastic home crowd.

Roe had asked for assistance from team-mate Archibald at the back-end of the race and dewily made her way across the gap to the leading quartet.

I’m just so chuffed with our result tonight,

We said at the start of this year’s Matrix Series that we were determined to win and that’s exactly what we’ve done.  Becky really deserved her win tonight, she’s worked so, so hard over the winter.  She’s had highs and lows and tonight is certainly a high for Becky and a high for the team.

Tom Varney

Stevenage after final race, Team Manager - Drops Cycling

Seeing the danger, Durrell followed, then Melissa Lowther and the three ebbed their way closer to the leaders.

The seven came together for the final lap before Roe made her move approaching the final corner.

Durrell edged Archibald out sprinting for second by a tyres width before Boylan’s bunch sprint for eight place gave WNT the team victory on the night moving them back into second in the team competition.

Drops remained leaders 50 points ahead of WNT and Breeze.

Ejay Harris remained the Eisberg sprint leader and Durrell the individual leader.

Matrix Fitness GrandPrix 2017, Round 3 Northwich

In the women’s Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series it remains Drops at the head of the Series, but there were new team and individual winners thanks to Emily Nelson and Team Breeze.

Run off in sunny and dry conditions, the women’s race came down to a bunch sprint, with Nelson taking her first win in the Series and Team Breeze riders filling three of the top six places.  The result extended Drops’ lead at the top of the standings, with Breeze moving into second spot and Team WNT falling back to third place.

Tour Series Round 2 – Jones and Archibald take Stoke-on-Trent

JLT Condor and Drops remained at the top of the men and women’s Tour Series following the second event of the season in Stoke-on-Trent, but only just after two action packed races in the Potteries.

JLT Condor held on to the leader’s jerseys presented by Eisberg as their Australian sprinter Brenton Jones won the race, but several members of the team were brought down in a penultimate lap crash that decimated the front group.

That disrupted the main group, and in particular the efforts of JLT Condor, but Jones hung on to claim his first race win in only his second Tour Series event, just ahead of Team Raleigh GAC’s Enrique Sanz and BIKE Channel Canyon’s James Lowsley Williams.

With a trio of riders firmly inside the top 10, Madison Genesis took the team win, making them the second most successful team in Tour Series history, and moving them up into second spot in the standings behind JLT Condor.

The defending champions now lead by two-points from Madison Genesis with BIKE Channel Canyon a further point behind as they head to Round Three in Northwich.

Earlier in the afternoon it had been the sheer power of Team WNT duo Katie Archibald and Eileen Roe, along with Drops rider Rebecca Durrell and Team Breeze’s Manon Lloyd that had decimated the field around the 1.4-kilometre Stoke-on-Trent course.

Led by the World and Olympic Champion, the quartet had pulled clear of the field, with Archibald heading them home for a one-four with teammate Roe.  That though wasn’t enough to dislodge Drops from the red and white Matrix Fitness GP Series leader jerseys, with Annie Simpson and Lucy Shaw’s rides at the front of the peloton maintaining their one-point lead at the top.

As well as taking the Brother Fastest Lap, Archibald also secured the Eisberg Sprints jersey and moved into the Series’ individual lead, ahead of Durrell.

In the men’s Series’ Jones took the Brother Fastest Lap on the final tour of the event, while Sebastian Mora continues in the Wiggle Points Jersey.  Spirit Racing Tifosi moved into the joint lead of the Midlands competition for guest teams alongside Brother NRG Driverplan, ahead of the deciding race in that division in Northwich.

The sun shone brightly for Lizzy Banks of Sunsport Velo RT in the season opener of the HSBC-UK British Cycling 2017 National Women’s Road Series the Tour of the Wolds, won in two-hours and thirty-four minuets and thirty-five seconds.

The first of nine rounds and a new course to the calendar, the Tour of the Wolds covers a distance of one-hundred and one kilometres setting out from Louth North-Westerly through South Elkinton and Binbrooke before turning Northerly at Tealby and onto a circuit through Caistor, then returning back to Louth and a three-kilometre twisty circuit through the town centre streets.

One-hundred riders set off at nine in the morning out of Louth, but split into three groups before arriving at the Caistor loop. The front group of around thirty riders rode up the testing climb at Nettleton Top but as they returned back towards Louth, six girls broke free.

Three times series winner Nikki Juniper [Team Ford Ecoboost], National Time Trial Champion Hayley Simmond [Team WNT], Anna Christian [Drops Cycling Team], Lizzy Banks [Sunsport Velo], Chanel Mason [Storey Racing] and Natalie Grinczer [Team WNT] arrived back on the finishing circuit with a one-minuet and ten second lead as Drops Cycling and Cycle Team OnForm drove the chase.

With three-hundred metres remaining, Juniper clipped wheels bringing her down and out of contention leaving five girls to fight for the win. Banks kept out of trouble and maintained her momentum going into the final left-hand corner before sprinting clearly for the line and a marvellous win.

Rebecca Durrell [Drops Cycling Team] brought the chasing bunch to the line some thirty-two seconds down on a beautiful day in Lincolnshire, much to the appreciation of the crowd that had lined the circuit in this first national race in the series.

Lizzy Banks leads the National Women’s Road Series going into round two the Essex Giro on Saturday 22nd April.

The Tour of the Wolds has given a boost to businesses in the area as well as significantly raising the profile of the Lincolnshire Wolds as a destination for cycling.

The event saw teams of professional cyclists and spectators staying in the area; and generated lots of exposure for the area through the media.  Feedback received from the competitors is that they enjoyed the challenge the Wolds presented to them; and that it is a great place for cycling.

We’ll now be working with our partners and the event organisers to look at what needs to be done to secure the event for future years.

James Gilbert

Communications and Tourism Manager, East Lindsey District Council

The Magna Vitae Tour of the Wolds has significantly raised the profile of Louth and the Lincolnshire Wolds. It is wonderful to see a sporting event change the face of the town for a day.

We are thrilled that so many local residents and businesses turned out to support the event and hope that everybody enjoyed the weekend.

The coverage that The Tour of the Wolds received online and in the media is testament to the success of this fantastic new event, and the publicity Louth received during the weekend will live on for many months ahead.

We look forward to working with key partners to bring more high-profile sporting and cultural events to the area.

Report & Gallery – Final Revolution UK Championship 2016

Revolution UK Championship 2016 Round 3 | 22 Oct – Manchester – Revolution 60

JTL Condor p/b Mavic secure the Revolution UK Championship 2016 and move on to Revolution Champions League which kicks off in Paris in four weeks time. Joining them are Team Pedalsure, Team WIGGINS and Maloja Pushbikers RT.

Bolstering up Maloja Pushbikers in this final round, Matt Rotherham partnered with Christian Grassman to help secure their place in the Championship League. Rotterham, a sprinter, had been riding the Sprint Omnium Series previously along with his brother Tom and proved a difficult rider to get past.

Matt started the afternoon session off with win in the Elimination Race fending of the likes of Ed Clancy [JLT Condor p/b Mavic] and Nico Hesslich [Revolution Allstars] showing he has the stamina for the longer endurance events too. Backing up his first event he also took the Flying Lap ahead of Clancy whom normally excels in this event posting a clear half second over two-hundred-and-fifty meters.

Matt then struggled in the Points Race finishing last, but teamie Grassman managed a lap that had him finishing fifth overall. Yoeri Havik [Team Pedalsure] stole the show lapping the field twice to secure their first win of the day.

An off day for JLT Condor in the Revolution Madison Time Trial saw the pair take their first Madison TT this season with a 55.118 ahead of Team Pedalsure and Team USN.

The Team Elimination Race went to Team WIGGINS Ethan Haytor and Matt Walls with Maloja finishing second ahead of JLT Condor.

The final event in the UK Championship the Scratch Race went to Joe Halt [Team USN] ahead of Yoeri  Havik [Team Pedalsure] and Andy Brown [Scotland Burness Paul].

The HOY Bikes Future Stars were crowned tonight in Manchester and both Jim Brown [Maloja Pushbikers RT] and Ellie Russell [Revolution Allstars] lead from Round One.

The final race in the series the Girls Six-Lap-Dash saw Russell light up the torch on the final lap as a lone break from Lucy Naylor [Nab Racing] had a half lap lead as the bell rung. The bunch had rode mostly together but looked like they would contest second place. The pace exploded and Russell’s rockets went into warp-drive to finish the Championship light years a head.

Russell started the evening off with a win in the Scratch Race whilst Ella Barnwell [Team USN] won the Points  Race securing her third position overall behind Anna Docherty [Team Pedalsure].

The Boys first event, the Points Race saw Alex Ridehalgh [Team WIGGINS] finishing second over the line behind James Codd [Team Raleigh GAC]. With half-a-dozen of the boys tied on five points, Ridehalgh’s three points in the first sprint left him one-points advantage at six.

Caleb Hill secured the Six-Lap-Dash for Maloja Pushbikers RT with Jim Brown third behind Ethan Vernon [Team Pedalsure].

The final race for the boys the Scratch Race saw Oscar Mingay [Team USN] out-sprint Matthew Shaw [JLT Condor p/c Mavic] and Alex Ridehalgh. Jim Browns fifth place tonight left him top of the leader board and the Championship winner 2016.

As the Elite UK Championship concluded along with the HOY Bikes Future Stars in Manchester tonight, the Women’s Elite Championship continues across the final three Championship League rounds finishing in London on the 03rd December.

Vox Women lead the way in the Women’s Championship after round two, but a one woman team of Neah Evans put Podium Ambition p/b Club La Santa back on top having won round one.

Evans was no match in the afternoon session wining all three races, the Elimination Race, the Flying Lap and the Points Race.

The first race of the afternoon saw Neah fending off Italy’s Elena Cecchini for Vox Women. Team Jadan Weldtite’s Jenny Holl finished third, their best result to-date for the young team from Hull.

Neah’s strong event from her sprint days the Flying Lap set a 14.800 ahead of Team GB’s Ellie Dickinson and Amber Joseph [Vox Women].

Evan’s came up against Dickinson again in the Points Race but wining four sprints over the twenty-kilometer event and gaining a lap with five others kept her in the lead through-out. Team Footon Velosport’s Christine Robinson led them across the final sprint and double points.

Dickinson got the better of Evans in the first race of the evening, the Scratch Race. Team Footon Velosports Laura Basso finished third with Holl fourth.

The final Women’s event the Elimination Race saw Evans back on top. Italian’s Cecchini and Basso were second and third with Dickinson finishing in forth.

Tom Rotherham won the Sprint Omnium event gaining the least amount of points throughout the day. Finishing consistently in the Keirin, Six-Lap-Dash and the Handicap Race Rotherhams only win was the Elimination Event.

Race Report & Gallery – Revolution Championship 2016 Round 2

Revolution UK Championship 2016 Round 2 | 08 Oct – Glasgow – Revolution 59

Building on their success in Round one, JLT Condor p/d Mavic’s Ed Clancy and Jon Mould extend their lead in the Revolution UK Championship going into Round three in Manchester in two weeks time.

They now lead by nineteen points with the final UK event on the 22nd October and should progress into the Revolution Championship League in Paris on 18/19 November.

Team Pedalsure and Team WIGGINS are joint second with Maloja Pushbikers a bit further back in fourth, but should still gain enough points in round three to progress into the Championships League to.

The racing in Glasgow got underway with the Elite Elimination/ Scratch race and Oli Wood for Team WIGGINS crossed the line first, Clancy, then Adam Blyth for Revolution Allstars.

Clancy took the Flying Lap for JTL with Wood second and Marcel Kalz third.

Andrew Tennant fought a tough and exciting Points race over one-hundred-and-twenty-laps for Team Pedalsure gaining a lap along with six others.

Dynamic Duo Clancy and Mould dominated the Revolution Madison Time Trial and this event in Glasgow’s Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome was no different. The pair posted a sub 56s with Maloja Pushbikers second and Team Pedalsure third.

Team Pedalsure’s Andrew Tennant clinched the Team Elimination event ahead of Maloja Pushbikers and Revolution Allstars as the field reduced in size every second lap.

The final event in Glasgow saw an impressive win for Team USN’s Matt Bostock. What looked like a lone break for Scotland’s Andrew Brown came back together with one lap remaining. Revolution Allstars Adam Blythe hauled back the escapees but the speed of Bostock, Clancy and Wood over the top of the peloton drove them onto the front for the final bunch sprint.

Round 3 of the Revolution UK Championship will be in the National Cycling Centre in Manchester on October 22nd.

In the Elite Women’s Championship, Katie Archibald (Podium Ambition p/b Club la Santa) set about the Championship lead with a victory in the first event, the Elimination Race. VOX Women’s Laurie Berthon put up a strong challenge to stay in contention but admitted defeat when it came down to the final two. Neah Evans (Podium Ambition) elevated their Championship challenge taking third place before going on to win the Flying Lap with a 14.666 just ahead of Berthon.

Evans went on to win the Scratch Race lapping the field along with six others.

The final event for the Elite Women was the Elimination Scratch Race with Abbie Dentus taking the victory for Team GB. Emily Nelson (Team Breeze) came second with Ellie Dickinson (Team GB) taking third. Nelson also road strong in the Points Race, lapping the field along with six others. Archibald kept the pace high throughout leaving Berthon and Amalie Winter-Olsen chasing hard to close the gap. Evans looked like she punctured with fewer than ten laps remaining, but under scrutineering deemed a loose wheel, so all her hard work featuring in most of the sprints came to no avail as her points were disqualified.

Podium Ambition move ahead of VOX Women in the Championship contest.

The Hoy Future Star races saw a commanding ride from Ellie Russell (Revolution) winning all three events of the evening. The theme for the day seemed to be a solo attack through all the events and the Hoy Future Star Girls Six-lap Dash was no different. Georgia Ashworth (Revolution Allstars) went from the gun before been overhauled by Alexandra Novacki (Cycling Ireland). Felicity Gledhill (NAB Racing) then took up the lead and with under half a lap remaining Russell swept her up.

The Hoy Future Star Boys racing provided three different winners. Charlie Kelly (Team Raleigh) won the Points Race. Jack Cruden (Team Scotland) won the Six-lap Dash and Ethan Vernon (Team Pedalsure) won the Scratch Race. Hoy Future Boy leader Jim Brown (Maloja Pushbikers) featured in most on the races and still leads the standings after round two.

The Omnium Style Sprinters competition was dominated by the Rotherham Brothers, Matt and Tom. Winning various heats in the Keirin, they went on to win the Elimination Race too, Matt beating Tom. The final race of the evening was a Handicap standing start two lap dash and Scotland’s Callum Skinner fended off the rest of the pack to cross the line first.

The final round in the Revolution UK Championship is in Manchester on 22nd October, before moving on the Champions League in Paris.
