Women’s Grasscrete Ryedale GP 2021 Gallery and Race Report

Round Two in both the Women’s & Men’s British Cycling National Road Series 2021 started in the grounds Ampleforth College with Ampleforth Abbey as the backdrop to a gruelling gritty 60 mile Women’s Race and 95 mile Men’s Race.

The usual early damp start welcomed around sixty-five riders to the start-line with a forecast of improving condition as the day went on. A circuit not for the fainthearted brought several tumbles & a splits into several groups on the earlier of the larger 2 circuits for the women.

With CAMS Basso Haley Simmonds & Pro-Noctus – Redchilli Bikes Jo Tindley setting the early pace & still a sizable group. The numbers dropped to around Thirty girls by the end of lap two.

An alliance formed on the smaller circuits when recently crowned Scottish Cycling’s National Women’s Champion Becky Storrie [Brother UK – Cycle Team OnForm] & Illi Gardner [CAMS Basso] forged ahead quickly establishing over a two minutes advantage.

With CAMS & OnForm out front, it was left to Storey Racing & AWOL-O’Shea to do the chasing.

The race approached the final drag up to the line with 500 metres remaining & a hefty lead for Storrie & Gardner. With two evenly matched riders – It was going to be the one with strongest legs that would take victory, and Gardner had the legs to finish it off for CAMS.

After a little wait. Pro-Noctis got a third place with Corrine Side for all their hard work whilst AWOL-O’Shea’s Francesca Morgans-Slader & Connie Hayes took fourth & fifth.

Preparing for the UCI World Mountain Bike Championships in Val di Sole, Italy 25-29 Aug, U23 Women’s Event Anna Kay took sixth.

CAMS-Basso’s Natalie Grinczer collected the Series Leaders Jersey going into the final round, the Curlew Cup in Northumberland on Sunday 26th September.

“This is probably my favourite National Series Race. I’ve been looking forward to it all year. I was nervous coming in. So, I’m really happy with the win.

It stayed together longer than I thought when it got to the Climbs it split, but then came back together.

We had a couple of goes to get away but it kept coming back. I sort of attacked coming up here [On the finish straight with 3 laps remaining.]”.

“It was tough! It was my first-time doing Ryedale, but I hadn’t looked at the course. I’d heard all about it – thought it was right up my street.

I knew going in that I wanted to force a breakaway, especially with somebody like Illi – cos – in Capernwray (Road Race) we were in a breakaway there. So, I knew she would be the perfect person to ride away with”.  Going on to say about Illi “She was like a little Mountain Goat going up the climbs – I was struggling Lol”.

Champions Crowned at Tour Series in Dumfries – Galleries & Race Reports

CAMS – Basso and Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling took the women’s and men’s Tour Series titles at the final round of the 2021 series in Castle Douglas.

Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling held on to their overall lead despite stiff opposition from defending champions Canyon dhb SunGod, whose dominant performance took them to within one point of retaining their title with the individual race win for Charlie Tanfield as consolation.  The victory was Tanfield’s first since competing at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Meanwhile 2019 women’s champions CAMS – Basso retained their title, overturning the lead of Pro-Noctis – Redchilli Bikes – Heidi Kjeldsen thanks to a strong performance on the streets of Dumfries & Galloway as Megan Barker took her second individual win of the week.

Jo Tindley (Pro-Noctis – Redchilli Bikes – Heidi Kjeldsen) took second on the night and ensured the runners up spot for her squad, as well as clinching the blue Freewheel.co.uk Sprints jersey.

CS: That’s two wins in a row!

M: “Yeh! I was on the back foot & I managed to salvage it.” 

CS: Did you feel like you weren’t quite on form? We were wondering whether you were holding back a little?

M: “No not really. I’m ok on the hard drag bit, but the technical bit around the back of the course is my downfall. I’ve been working on that. The last five laps I just moved up to the front, led it out for a while & managed to hang on.”

In the men’s competition it was Guisborough race winner Matt Gibson (Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling) taking the Sprints jersey, a competition he also won in the 2018 Tour Series.

Gibson’s performance in the Castle Douglas round was key to Ribble Weldtite retaining their Freewheel.co.uk yellow jerseys, with the Warrington-born rider the only member of his five-rider team to make the front group that had been driven away by Canyon dhb SunGod.

Having had their chances of a historic hattrick of Tour Series titles damaged by losing a pair of riders to a crash in Round One in Guisborough, Canyon dhb SunGod knew that they needed to put significant distance and other teams between themselves and Ribble Weldtite on the night.

CS: Here you come using what looks like Tokyo form (After infamously being crashed into by the Danish Team Pursuit Squad on the Izu Velodrome Track). How did that feel?

C: “Yeh Amazing! The lads did a great job all night, so if anyone could finish it off for the Team on the night. The goal was to get the Team win – so fingers crossed with a lap to go I knew it would be amazing.

Strong performances from the Wales Racing Academy and Crimson Orientation Marketing RT nearly helped Canyon dhb SunGod achieve that. But ultimately the efforts of Gibson, Charles Page, Freddie Scheske, Cameron Jeffers and Will Brown was enough for a first Tour Series title for Ribble Weldite.

Highlights of the Castle Douglas races are on ITV4 at 7pm on Friday 13 August with a repeat at 6.55am on Saturday 14 August and available for 30 days via the ITV Hub.

Race Report & Gallery – Round 2 Tour Series – Sunderland

Welsh riders came out on top in the first ever Sunderland round of the Tour Series as Megan Barker (CAMS – Basso) and Will Roberts (Wales Racing Academy) took the individual honours on Wearside.

Barker’s victory, her third Tour Series win, helped CAMS – Basso take the win on the night to set up a nail biting finale in Castle Douglas on Thursday with just one point separating them and Series leaders Pro-Noctis – Redchilli Bikes – Heidi Kjeldsen.

Meanwhile Roberts took the men’s win on the night as reigning champions Canyon dhb SunGod bounced back from their disappointing opening event to take their tenth-round victory.  Heading to Scotland they trail overall leaders Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling by three points, keeping the dream of a historic hattrick of titles alive, but very much an outside shot.

After a packed day of family activities in Sunderland’s Mowbray Park, Britain’s leading men’s and women’s teams took the stage on the fast 1.3km circuit around the perimeter of the park.

Despite predictions that the long uphill drag of Burdon Road would split the peloton, and the efforts of a motivated CAMS – Basso team to do just that, the field largely hung together with Jo Tindley’s Pro-Noctis – Redchilli Bikes – Heidi Kjeldsen team able to shadow their moves and keep the five yellow Freewheel.co.uk jerseys.

Tindley also held on to the Freewheel.co.uk Sprints competition while there was a first ever Brother UK Fastest Lap win for Crimson Orientation Marketing RT and Samantha Stuart.

After their victory in Guisborough on Sunday Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling kept the men’s yellow Freewheel.co.uk jerseys, two points ahead of Crimson Orientation Marketing RT with Canyon dhb SunGod and Wales Racing Academy level a further point in arrears.

The Welsh team enjoyed a standout Sunderland round with Gorseinon’s Roberts attacking from a small group to hold on to the win by just over a second from Ollie Rees (TRINITY Racing) while fellow Wales Racing Academy rider Joe Holt took third.

Active throughout had been British Olympian Charlie Tanfield having been drafted into the Canyon dhb SunGod fresh from arriving back from Tokyo to take fourth on the night and help his team to victory.

As well as keeping the overall teams lead, Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling hold onto the Freewheel.co.uk Sprints jersey through Matt Gibson while Chris McGlinchey took the Brother UK Fastest Lap for Team Spectra p/b Wiggle.

Highlights of the Sunderland races are on ITV4 at 7pm on Wednesday 11 August with a repeat at 12.30pm on Thursday 12 August and available for 30 days via the ITV Hub.

Tour Series - Round 3

The final round (Round Three) of the 2021 Tour Series takes place on Thursday 12 August in Castle Douglas in Dumfries & Galloway as a part of the CD Bike & Food Festival with 18:00 (women’s) and 19:30 (men’s).

Owing to current COVID-19 guidelines in Scotland, the Castle Douglas round will be ticketed (free of charge) and limited to 3,500 spectators.

Dolan Bikes – Announced as Official Bike Partner – Tour of Britain 2021

Lancashire-based leading bike brand Dolan Bikes have been appointed the official bike partner of this year’s Tour of Britain, Women’s Tour and Tour Series, the UK’s biggest and most prestigious cycling events.

As part of the partnership, two lucky race fans will win a fully custom-built road bike worth £3,000 during this year’s Tour of Britain (5 – 12 September) and Women’s Tour (4 – 9 October). Choosing from a Dolan Ares or Dolan Tuono, the winners will be able to create the bike of their choice, including paint scheme overseen by Dolan Bikes’ in-house team.

The partnership got underway to coincide with the opening round of the Tour Series in Guisborough, with Wales Racing Academy rider Will Roberts winning Round Two in Sunderland on a Dolan Rebus.

Dolan Bikes specialise at offering bikes direct to customers – no two bikes are the same and each customer is able to specify every component on the build. Dolan Bikes’ heritage stretches back to 1966, when Terry Dolan began to build frames in Walton, Liverpool, before going on to establish his own shop. The brand then went on to supply international teams and professionals on both road and track. Terry’s history with the both Tour of Britain – in its Kellogg’s Tour guise – and the Milk Race dates to the mid-1980s when he made frames for ANC Halfords and Team Falcon Cycles, who won the events on six occasions.

The Tour Series Returns – Round 1 – Guisborough Race Report

Eluned King (Great Britain Under-23) and Matt Gibson (Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling) powered their teams to victory in the opening round of the Tour Series in Guisborough on Sunday, as the Series made a triumphant return after 806 days away.

King outsprinted Jo Tindley (Pro-Noctis – Redchilli Bikes – Heidi Kjeldsen) and Ellen McDermott (Team Boompods) from a six-rider group in the women’s race before Gibson soloed to victory in the following men’s event with a dominant win by almost a complete lap.

The results put the Great Britain Under-23 track women’s team and Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling into the yellow Freewheel.co.uk leaders’ jerseys heading to Round Two in Sunderland on Tuesday (10 August).

King and teammate Abi Smith were part of a six-rider group that went away early on in the women’s race, building a lead of just under a minute that they held until the end, with King outsprinting Tindley at the Westgate finish line.  The win comes two weeks after King won the overall title at the British Cycling National Circuit Series while Tindley’s consolation was taking the Freewheel.co.uk Sprints jersey while Smith won the opening Brother UK Fastest Lap of 2021.

In the opening men’s race Gibson’s dominant display was helped by an early crash that eliminated his Ribble Weldtite teammate Freddie Scheske and several other riders and split the peloton.  That gave Gibson the opportunity that he seized, forging clear and coming home nearly 90 seconds ahead of the main bunch, led in Joe Holt of the Wales Racing Academy and Leon Mazzone (Crimson Orientation Marketing RT).

The win – Gibson’s third Tour Series victory – helped Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling to their first ever Tour Series team win ahead of Crimson Orientation Marketing RT and the Scottish national team.

 

Highlights of the Guisborough races are on ITV4 at 7pm on Monday 9 August with a repeat at 12.30pm on Tuesday 10 August and available for 30 days via the ITV Hub.

Tour Series - Round 2

Next up for the Tour Series is the first ever Sunderland round on Tuesday 10 August.

Held on a 1.3 kilometre circuit starting and finishing on Burdon Road.

Racing will be fast and aggressive owing to the city’s four-corner circuit based around the stunning Mowbray Park. Starting and finishing in the shadow of the Jack Crawford statue, a memorial to a local sailing hero, the course takes in Burdon Road, Park Road, Toward Road and Borough Road, as well as passing the city’s Museum and Winter Gardens.

TUESDAY 10 AUGUST

Women’s team presentation – 5pm.

Women’s race – 5:30pm to 6:20pm.

Women’s podium ceremony – 6:20pm

Men’s team presentation: 6:35pm

Men’s race – 7pm to 8:15pm.
